January 10, 2009

AT the most recent executive meeting, we sampled an array of Argentinean wines.  During our discussions, we were surprised to learn that Argentina is the 5th largest wine producing nation in the world.  That puts it behind France, Spain, Italy and the USA.  Which means that it puts it ahead of Chile, New Zealand, Germany and Australia.  That was interesting to learn.

Despite some of our concerns that our Argentinean focus would turn into a night of 7 bottles of Malbec, we sampled a variety of grapes.
With all of the malbec craze over the last few years, it was interesting to learn that the major grape produced in Argentina was Bonarda, which was brought to Argentina by Italian immigrants, as Malbec or Auxerrois was brought by the French.

Most of the wines brought were produced in the Mendoza region although the neighbouring San Juan region is becoming famous for its syrah production.

Overall, the night was festive and the wines were strong overall and individually.  It is clear that the wines of Argentina provide good value.

The VWC is sending one of its members to Chile and Argentina to provide some local perspectives on the wines of their region.  Stay tune for Ms. Ah-Chuen’s column upon her return.

The wines we sampled were:
Luigi Bosca Malbec Reserva $23.99
Jean Bousquet Malbec Reserva $19.99
